Award during 123rd AES Convention

From 5 till 8 October 2007 the 123rd Convention of Audio Engineering Society took place in New York. One of Convention sessions was the Student Design Competition providing the final presentation of the best student projects from the digital signal processing domain. Competitors presented results of their work and answered detailed questions from a jury consisting of representatives of American industry enterprises. One of the finalists was Piotr Odya, who works at the Multimedia Systems Department and recently completed his Ph. D. studies. Piotr Odya presented results of his Ph.D. thesis. He received Certificate of Merit for his achievement and, additionally, received a pair of professional headphones along with his diploma.

The Piotr Odya project concerned a subminiature device, which improves speech fluency of people who stutters. The device is called Subminiature Digital Speech Aid (SDSA). The SDSA is of a size of a regular ear-canal hearing aid. Consequently, the patients can easily use it in everyday situations. Interlocutors might not even realize their conversation partner uses a speech corrector. A hybrid digital signal processor was chosen as a core part of the device engineered. The SDSA implements some well-known speech correction algorithms, such as delaying (DAF) or frequency altering (FAF) speech signal, but also enables to use combination of these methods (DAF and FAF, FAF-to-DAF morphing). Moreover, new algorithms such as: reverb or delay modulation, not used before in the anti-stuttering devices, have been implemented in the SDSA.

PhD students from MSD receive awards during 121st AES Convention

From 5 till 8 October 2006 the 121st International Convention of Audio Engineering Society took place in San Francisco. One of Convention sessions was the Student Design Competition providing the final presentation of the best student projects from the digital signal processing domain. Competitors presented results of their work and answered detailed questions of a jury consisting of representatives of American industry enterprises. Two Ph.D students from the Multimedia Systems Department of the Technical University of Gdansk were invited to the final part of the competition.

One of the projects was presented by Maciej Kulesza. The project is related to a specially designed contactless hearing aid for infants. Hearing loss compensation is crucial for infants, because the language development through home intervention should start in the early months for a newborn baby. Infants with those disorders may have serious problems in school and in general communication in elder age. A proposed solution enables hearing loss compensation from first months of infants' lives. On the contrary to the off-the-shelf hearing aids the engineered device is installed in infant's crib. Itemploys several digital processing algorithms implemented to a DSP processor.

Paweł Żwan, the author of the application which won the second posiotion in the same competition, presented a system for singing voice emission training. The application determines singing voice parameters in real time and presents them on a PC screen. A comparison of results to those obtained for some professional singers is also possible. It forms a visual feedback which enables a singer to monitor the correctness of results of the performed emission exercises and in result it enables a vocal training by matching voice parameters to professional singers.

Both projects originated form the Multimedia Systems Department have won the first and the second prize, respectively. Maciej Kulesza was given a scholarship founded by Lavry Engineering - a well known analog-digital converters producer, Paweł Żwan received a DSP card with a set of audio plugins along with his diplomma.

The choir was recorded in St. Nicholas Basilica. Nine microphones have been used, the first seven have been set up in a "Fukada tree" array, which is dedicated for surround recordings. The other two microphones have been placed 12 meters away from the main array, and they were used as an ORTF stereo pair to record the ambience.
